CILAC is a non-profit Public Interest Law Centre whose Objectives are to: -
1. provide specialised legal and business advice and referral services, professional development resources and advocacy for artists and arts organisations.
2. advise artists and creators throughout South Africa with respect to arts related queries including, inter alia: -
2.1 contracts;
2.2 copyright and the effective management of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs);
2.3 business structures.
3. engage with relevant stakeholders primarily governmental and non-governmental structures on matters affecting the cultural industries in South Africa;
4. ensure the sustainability of contributors to cultural industries through the provision of further services pertaining to professional development resources such as publications and presentations;
5. serve as an independent and relevant structure within the cultural industries sector, that can, through it being a repository of pertinent and significant information: -
5.1 Influence policy surrounding issues central to culture, heritage and the artistic world at large; and
5.2 Advocate law reform where necessary;
6. serve as an invaluable resource (and/or model) for the African continent as the only centre of its kind dedicated to: -
6.1 safeguarding the interests of artists and creators alike in their sustainable development;
6.2 the recognition, preservation and maintenance of African culture and heritage.
